Maastricht, Netherlands / June 2, 2012

A team of four travelers – Yvo Kuhling (Netherlands), Liselott Martynenko Agerlid (Sweden), Philomena O'Brien (Australia) and Todd Hepworth (Australia) traveled to 17 countries in 23 hours, 30 minutes.

They visited Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Austria, Slovenia, Italy, Germany, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, Belgium and The Netherlands.

The trip began at Samac in Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 1, 2012 at 20:43. In each country the team got out of the car to step foot in the country and take a couple of photos. A cracking playlist and in-car menu kept the team's morale high throughout the attempt.

A GPS tracker recorded the trip at around five minute intervals and included each country as well. Learn more about the feat here.

- must physically stand in each country
- must complete visits within any consecutive 24-hour period
- must provide media evidence

what do you get with this record

  • Wales Mark Evans

nice to see another welsh record well done , what about trying to see how many villages you can visit in wales in 24 hours

  • Wales Phil Billingham

And we are done and on the site. Brilliant. Though I think this has been beaten by using airplanes. Still, we hold the record for most countries in 24 hours on land only

  • Wales Phil Billingham

Hi Philomena. Yes, its been a struggle to get the evidence across to Record Setter - massive files! I hope this will be sorted out soon

Paperwork - it's always the paperwork........!

  • The Internet Paddy Halliwell

Well done Phil! 18 in 24 .....monumental effort - We're thinking that 19 isn't possible...

    Congrats

    Paddy

    • Wales Phil Billingham

Thanks Paddy. Still coming down, have not slept yet. Gut feel is that 19 is too hard, and we would not want to do this again. But never say never, as they say.

Appreciate your comments, and will get info up online ASAP. FYI, we got to 17 in 22 hours 9 minutes. After that, just pedal to the metal!

Hi Phil We had a crack at 18 last year and it was tough, but we know where we went wrong and are considering giving it another go later this year................unless of course you beat us to it. Looking forward to seeing what you are intending

  • Wales Phil Billingham

Hi Guys - the challenge is on. Having done 12 in 24 (Not recorded properly) a few years ago, wanted to do this for a while. We have a plan! Its going to be hard, and the focus will need to be safety. We'll keep you up to date as we go and as plans unfold.

    • The Internet Andy Lelean

Fantastic - another challenger - good luck

    • The Internet Andy Lelean

    • Australia Todd Hepworth

Philomena O'Brien, Liselott Agerlid and Yvo Kuhling :) thanks!!!! (oh and the Norwegian 16 in 24 that we beat!)

  • Australia Todd Hepworth

If you want some hints and tips then let me know

    • The Internet 18in24

Would be grateful of any handy hints please Todd.

    • Australia Todd Hepworth

to start with. 1. Those with border crossings (non-Schengen) try to time at late night...less other cars 2. Save your getting out of the car by remembering in the Schengen zone you can walk back and forward and the country sign is on either side. So do Netherlands/Belgium together, then Luxembourg/France... rather than separately! 3. Make sure you have printed paper maps (we made a book of google maps close in) so you can track your progress in case the GPS doesn't have certain highways. 4. Make sure your GPS maps are up to date 5. Don't follow the GPS all the time :) If you know from your map that you should go around the town (like us going THROUGH Szeged Hungary, rather than around it).
      6. Don't blow your fuses. 7. Take your camera phones and extra cameras to take lots of vids, pics! 8. Don't drive too fast in France :P 9. When the google maps suggests that the drive through Austria takes the same rough time as the extra 30-40km through Germany this is because Austria has TUNNELS!!!!!! 10. Enjoy yourself!

    • Australia Todd Hepworth

hmm that didn't format like it was meant to

    • Australia Todd Hepworth

oh and we used Instamapper to track progress but I think that website has closed down.

    • The Internet 18in24

Many thanks Todd - much appreciated.

    • Wales Phil Billingham

Hi Todd. We are looking at Serbia, and border crossings. What was your experience, any thoughts?

    • Australia Todd Hepworth

The serbia Hungary one is the bottleneck. I advise midnight to 5am if you can time it.

    • Australia Todd Hepworth

Also a new bypass around Belgrade had just opened 2 years ago, don't go the shorter looking route through Ruma and the forest....

  • The Internet Andy Lelean

You have reignited my interest if you fall short, I think we might have to have a crack next year. ( still not sure it's possible), 72 mph is a big ask

  • The Internet Andy Lelean

Are you going to tweet progress?

  • The Internet Andy Lelean

18 in 24, I trust you will be observing the "must stand in every country" rule. I'm sure you'll get very good at the "5 second dance and photo".

  • The Internet 18in24

    1730miles in 24 hours - 12th October 2013, watch this space.

    • The Internet Andy Lelean

Good luck - Todd is that you or someone new?

    • The Internet 18in24

We are new boys to this challenge. 4 of us from the UK setting off on the 13th October. We have just stated a facebook page 18in24 and we will hopefully start to get the word around and update people.

      Bryan, Mark, Gareth and Brian

    • The Internet Andy Lelean

Good luck - 18 is going to be tough

    • Australia Todd Hepworth

      Good luck chums

  • Australia Todd Hepworth

Andy, Thanks for the comments. Of course your trip was one of our inspirations! We've thought about 18...it would be crazy-tough...but good luck

  • The Internet Andy Lelean

    18?

  • The Internet Andy Lelean

Hi, Andy here (of Andy and Paddy, who set the bar at a measly 13 a few years back). Congratulations - well done to you all - fantastic. Paddy and I had been hatching a plan to have a crack at 17 and "get our record back" - guess we don't need to bother now - grrrrrr!

    well done

  • Australia Todd Hepworth

Thanks for all your kind words...it was tough, difficult and at times we didn't think it was going to work but in the end we got there.

Jenn - nope nothing was nearby (Denmark? UK?) We've looked at 18 countries and have noted that an extra 250km might get us Poland but 250km in 30mins is a little bit difficult :)

Emily - we spent a LOT of time in Austria ...so we are biased. But I liked the 10 minutes we were in Liechtenstein or the 5 minutes in Slovenia!

  • United States Alicia Weber

Wow, terrific work and an exciting world record!

  • United States Emily Patricia

You're featured on our Facebook page today. Congrats!

  • United States Jenn Wark

You couldn't have used the last 30 minutes to squeeze in one more country? :D Just kidding, this is a great category and an excellent attempt!

  • United States Emily Patricia

Wow. Incredible! What was your favorite country?!

  • Canada Dan Rollman

    Fantastic. Nicely done!

  • Spain Miguel De Diego

    increidible, just thst

  • Canada Dan Rollman

I would argue that sugarfree syrup deserves its own category.

  • United States Rob Birdsong

The three record holders so far have all used Original syrups in the neighborhood of 2000-2500 calories per 24-ounce bottle.

  • does it have to be a certain type of syrup? could it be sugarfree?

  • Dan, you're an animal and I'm glad it came out of both ends because one is not enough.

  • United States Danny Infinite

"See now there you have it, you're doing it all wrong. You've got to open your throat, relax the jaw... and don't forget to cup the balls."

  • thats great...reminds me of super troopers

  • Canada Dan Rollman

Andy and Paddy, I salute you.

  • The Internet Deborah Hampton

    awesome.
