No player can spawn in lava then on a safe plain of grass because Minecraft would have made you spawn on the grass block instead of in the lava. You also cannot spawn IN lava only ON it, and spawning ON lava is only possible if there are no safe spawn spots in the whole of the chunk, but it was clearly seen that you respawned on a safe place and not in the lava again.
