Yes, Alex is right. I've done not just some experimentation but some really hard thinking: is eight the TOTAL max and COULD it possibly be beaten? Nope.
Because you get 7 letters in your rack, thus you have the word that you spelled and each letter can complete one word perpendicular to the word, for a total of 8. (Hope that was a good explanation. If not, I can make a video)

@Earl: Yes, you can get 12 letters in one word. But, it is not then possible to make 13 unnaccepted words. Try, you'll see.
