This record was broken by me in 2013 http://superofficialnews.com/guinness-world-record-for-longest-twitter-hashtag-has-been-announced/

highmagnicausesagony is that too long????? Answer me peasants. Oh and while you are at it, bow.

not technically 557 characters... ⅷ is only one character. (try selecting it!)

World record goes back to Tyler Furman.

  • United States Rob Birdsong

Julian - we DENIED your attempt because you did not use Twitter.

  • United States Tyler Furman

Actually, he did cheat! That's not even twitter, look in the top left corner, it says "Twiffo".

  • United States Tyler Furman

Ok, now this is just getting dumb. I thought my record was a BS one, but I did it for fun. I don't even understand how it is physically possible to get that many... without hacking or some form of cheating.

  • United States Heather Cash

This is stupid and not creative. I would rather see a real tag that actually makes sense. Who would actually tag something as ffiffiffi? No one. This basically took 0 effort and anyone could have done it. Not so interesting to me.

The question is how does one define the word "character". In this category, I'd vote to say that characters apply to what a person would recognize as a latin character, thus making this a legit entry.

  • Its not entirely accurate. Twitter only allows up to 140 characters and he used a character that appears to be comprised of 3 characters (ffi). The character is actually Unicode U+FB03 and named "LATIN SMALL LIGATURE FFI". So the hashtag is really only 140 characters long and can't be any longer.

  • how is that possible?

  • The Internet Morgan Jones

Ok, it's time for me to play. Consider this broken.

  • The Internet Morgan Jones

It is creative, I'll give it that.

  • You could only put it 139 times as you need the #. Also it is beatable if some puts it 139 times.

  • United States Matt Parker

So if someone just put "!!" 140 times in twitter, that would be the record and it would be unbeatable, right?

  • completely agree, if you had thought of it you would have taken advantage of it right? instead of getting upset just congratulate CtrlLTdel on his outstanding cleverness.

  • Ya'll are just jealous cuz you didn't think of it first.

  • Twitter has a set rule of 140 characters. It's pretty clear that you cannot exceed that. If this is record is going to stand then technically, it can still be beaten...lol

  • This is definitely CHEATING! The former hashtag was unbeatable and the use of the '?' is definitely one character. In fact, doing a Word document character count shows that this record has fewer characters than the previous record by Rob Blatt. Where's the button to challenge a record? REINSTATE Rob Blatt's record!

  • United States Corey Henderson

Indeed, whose definition of the word "character" do we use? Latin character or ASCII character? I set up a rules page on the urdb wiki by the way: http://sites.google.com/site/urdbwiki/rules/twitter

  • The Internet Morgan Jones

This is BS! I think that '?' should count as a single character because it actually is one. '!!' is different.

  • United States LeeAnna Gelineau

    I think this is cheating...

Further proof this record is theoretically beatable: http://www.nowpublic.com/culture/longest-tweet-history-247-characters

We had a long discussion about this record before posting it. To your points, the record doesn't appear to be breakable, which goes against one of our main URDB guidelines. It made us realize there are a number of "Dead End" categories on our site. For example, we have Fewest Toenails On A Foot (2): http://bit.ly/34ZoUi. It's a breakable record. If someone without feet beat it, the new record (0) would be unbreakable. Does that mean the category has to close at 1, the last breakable number? The reason we added "Breakable" as a stipulation was to encourage competition on the site. Maybe we have to change the language a bit? Maybe we say categories have to be quantifiable and breakable instead of saying records themselves have to be quantifiable and breakable. I'll also add, for what it's worth, that I do believe this record is breakable. Maybe it will challenge programmers to tweak code and find a way to sneak in a longer tweet. Maybe the URDB community will agree that hyperlinked text can be included in the category. Maybe people like myself will get creative with Twitpic and do stuff like this (sent before we got this record, BTW): http://bit.ly/34ZoUi Would love to hear what others think.

  • Invalid - records must be theoretically beatable. There is a 140 character limit, so this does not qualify.

  • this is unbeatable
