While i guess I agree with the consistancy, I do not see why this was denied considering the rules were not updated. I do not see why we would have to go through the entire comments section to see rules consistency, if it was not updated in the rules, i don't think should be denied.

@Zach We aren't denying attempts with music. We've just warned people that if issues arise, we may need to remove audio.

We have added "ball must bounce on table before players hit it" to criteria.
We are going to re-time Max's submission starting right after the "air ball" and reduce the time to match. If we denied attempt, there would be no reason why Max and his friend wouldn't just edit their video and resubmit.

Colby's correct. The ball that was hit in the air is a violation of table tennis rules. Table tennis rules do not allow for volleys. This one is particularly egregious since it looks like it would have missed the table altogether. This record attempt should be denied.

towards the beginning, he hit the ball before it hit the table. that's an obstruction and is illegal in table tennis rules

It does look like a penhold grip: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tabletennisstyles and a list of others: http://tabletennis.about.com/od/griptypes/a/griptypes.htm although I think the comment was relating to the grip style changing throughout the attempt. Also a good question for clarification on the seats - the only criteria mentioned is "chair must remain stationary". And so is "bar stool" considered a "chair". It looks as though they are on office chairs (with swivel which would have helped!). I guess it comes to size? Maybe no taller than exposing your lower torso above the table top.

So folks, are any kind of chairs acceptable? It's hard to see what kind of chairs they're sitting in, but would bar stools be accepted, for example?

That is actually not an unheard-of grip, especially in Asia. I've played experienced, competitive players who use it...I think it's called a penhold grip.
