Simon-- Yes. It's against the rules of the game to hit a table tennis ball before it bounces on your side of the table.

Does the ball have to bounce?

Yes we most definitely are, we will try to get a World Record video in ASAP. In the mean time I do believe the since the record was completed before the rules were changed, that our video up now should remain up. At least until we get the new video up. Note that this is just my request, feel free to do what ever you need so that when we do appempt the real record correctly. Also for the record, my friends name is Jack

OK, changed title to "Returns." Also agree that we should deny this attempt and add a rule that net must be at regulation height. Mike Uba and friend, are you guys down to try again?

Yes, Rob, I'd agree. As to the debate about rally/volley/return, volleys refer to hitting the ball before it hits the ground/table. "Returns" would be a more precise term.

That net seems like it is sagging considerably. Anyone else see this?

yes Simon, this is an example of one "rally" in 30 seconds and 49 "returns" or "vollies". I think volley is the correct term but both sound OK, certainly not "rallies"

I think this is still incorrect titling. I found this definition of a rally: "Definition: According the the ITTF rules, a rally is the period during which the ball is in play. The ball is in play from the last moment at which it is stationary on the palm of the free hand before being intentionally projected in service until the rally is decided as a let or a point. Also Known As: point, exchange." In this record, they have just one rally in 30 seconds. Also the 49 volleys listed as the amount, while the title is about most rallys. I think that "Most rallies" would be a relevant for an attempt where someone served, someone returned the serve, counting as one rally. They would then have to do that process as many times as possible in 30 seconds. That's not what is happening here. I think this should be something like "most table tennis returns in one rally" or something along those lines. You feel me?

I can speak for regular tennis and say these are definitely not volleys, but rather it would be called a "rally". I am open to the idea that table-tennis has different terminology, but I strongly suggest that this record is mis-categorized.
